Jean Martin Charcot
1825 - 1873
A French neurologist who thought that hypnosis and hysteria both reflected a disorder of the central nervous system.
Charcot concluded that hypnosis was only useful in psychotic patients, and started to put on demonstrations firstly for doctors, and then for lay crowds, inadvertently leading to the advent of stage hypnosis.
